a4 paper is standard in the UK and Europe, but is difficult to find in the states. In inches it's 8.3 × 11.7 so a little thinner and longer than letter size.

This is the most frequently used paper size worldwide and measures at 210 × 297 mm. By 1977 this was the accepted standard in 88 of 148 countries, and today is the standard in all countries except the US and Canada which is 8.5" by 11" which may cause your files to print out badly, due to this differentiation.
