Well what I use to sleep is Tylenol pm. The only problem with using that is that it makes me very irritable the next day. You can try other over the counter medications. But I think for your best results is to get a medicated sleep aid. That is prescribed to you by a doctor.

Over the counter sleeping medications are usually made of antihistamines which are commonly used for allergies such as Doxylamine or Diphenhydramine. These are great options for short term insomnia. Any other sleep medications would need to be prescribed by a physicians like benzodiazepines, sedatives, or hypnotics. These would require monitoring by a physician.

Usually it's a difference between getting a prescription or getting an over the counter medicine. It's best to talk to your primary physician to see which is best.

First distinction is prescription vs. non prescription. If you want to go OTC you can do something natural like melatonin or an OTC sleep aid. OTC sleep aids are often antihistamines. As for prescriptions, there are some to help you to fall asleep or to stay asleep. Ask your doctor.

Non-prescription sleep aids are a combination of acetominiphin and Benadryl. If you don't have associated pain, one can simply take Benedryl.Prescribed sleep aids include Ambien, Ambien time release and Lunestra.

Over-the-counter medications are good for minor issues. Melatonin is natural and most often for those who are off their natural sleep cycle/schedule. Ambien & other prescriptions are for severe insomnia.
