Motherboards are most often categorized based on form factor, as different form factors have different sizes and slightly different mounting layouts. The oldest form and largest was AT, though it isn't commonly found today. The ATX form factor is its successor and if the most common, along with the smaller MicroATX, and the super small Mini-ITX and pico-ITX.

You have your regular old fashioned motherboards for older computers that only run one processor, such as the original Pentium. Then, you have a new duo board that will take two processors,. My personal favorite is the quad board, four processors, and you never run out of power.
