The four main types of saxophone are the: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. The soprano is the smallest and resembles a clarinet, the alto is the most common and good for beginners, the tenor is slightly larger than the alto with a curved neck and is used primarily as a jazz instrument, the baritone is the largest.

The soprano saxophone comes with both a straight and a curved neck, and there is also the alto, tenor and baritone saxophone. the typical alto is in Eb, but there is also a Bb alto sax, played in the sane key as the soprano and the tenor.

The saxophone types correspond to human vocal ranges: The soprano sax is the smallest. Some of them look like a typical--but very small--saxophone, and some are straight, like brass clarinets. The alto sax is the next largest, then the tenor sax. These are the ones you see most often. The largest and lowest is the baritone sax.
