What are the different features to look at when identifying lettuce?

I'm talking about trying to identify lettuce in the wild, not in the grocery store.

When identifying lettuce, the best ways to tell them apart are color, leaf size, leaf shape, and shape of the leaf edges. Find some photos of different types to compare.

Colors and leaf-shape are the factors that are easiest to identify when spotting lettuce in the wild. As you know from the grocery store, lettuce comes in many shapes and sizes. This technique alone can distinguish most lettuces from each other. If you can't tell by shape and color, then crush a leaf and smell it.

Look at the color of the leaves and note whether they are light or dark green or reddish. Also look at the curl of the leaves.

You want to look at the shape of leaves and how it grows. Pretty much if you have seen a head of lettuce you should know what it looks like.
