Four locations are known to have civilizations in 3000 BCE (5000 years ago). Multiple tribes inhabited Mesopotamia; Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China had active cultures. There is evidence of settled groups of people around the Mediterranean even earlier, and of civilized human cultures in the Americas a little later.

Strong cases can be made for the 5000-year continuity of Chinese (Neolithic Liangzhu culture, c. 3400 BCE), Japanese (Neolithic Jomon culture, c. 3000 BCE), Indian (Indus Valley culture, c. 3000 BCE), and Greek (Minoan, Cycladic, and early Helladic cultures, all c. 3000 BCE) civilizations; the Neolithic precursors of the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations stretch back to 6500-6000 BCE.
