Jealousy is primarily caused by being envious of someone or even something else. Oftentimes, the person will compare what the other person has to what they feel that they do not have. Jealous can also be used to spark a more competitive edge in some people that drives them towards their own success.

There are a few root causes of jealousy. The first one is lack of self confidence (doubting your abilities). The second is poor self image (not thinking you are good enough). Another is fear (ending up alone, not succeeding, etc). The final one is insecurity. This one is a result of lack of self confidence and poor self image.

Jealousy has only one cause and that is a lack of self esteem in ones self. Jealousy comes out when we are forced to consider or recognize that we may have short comings as people. These can be regarding physical appearance, intelligence, education level or even something like ability to complete a task.

It is caused by internal, rather than external problems: it could be triggered by insecurity, lack of confidence, poor self image, low self esteem.
