Where the gums meet the teeth, it is possible for bacteria to get under the gum, multiply and cause damage to the gum, causing it to pull back or recede. This puts the teeth at risk. Our mouths have loads of bacteria and without good oral hygiene, the bacteria can take a toll.

There can be many causes, including malnutrition and even age. The most common cause, however, is gum disease. Many people have gum disease and do not even know it; you can brush your teeth regularly and still get it. Regular dental cleanings and checkups are the only cure.

Your gum tissue rest at the junction of the teeth where the enamel meets the root. When your gum tissue shrinks or moves away from the junction it's exposed the root surfaces. Things such as improper tooth brushing , positioning and age are some things that cause gum recession.

A lack of proper oral hygiene leads to gum disease, known as periodontitis. As this condition progresses, the tissues making up the gums begin to shrink and cause this recession.
