On a day when the menstrual flow is particularly heavy, the blood will often clot. This is fairly normal during perimenopause. If, however, you are bleeding through super-sized tampons at a rate of more than one in an hour, contact a healthcare professional.

Often times, clots in vaginal blood are due to lack of proper hydration or a change in diet. Getting tested for anemia is a good idea, as lack of iron in your blood can cause differences in clotting.

Your uterus sheds tissue during menstruation, so vaginal clots are often normal. If you are pregnant, have unusual pain, excessive bleeding or frequent and large clots, please see your doctor.

If these clots are experienced during menstrual cycles they are usually normal and are due to the shedding of tissues from the walls of the uterus. Blood clots experienced at other times are not normal and need to be brought to the attention of your physician.
