Those black and yellow spiders are called "writing" spiders. The character Charlotte from E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web" was a writing spider.

Most likely these are Golden Garden Spiders, also called simply Garden Spiders and their scientific name is Argiope Aurantia. They have a black abdomen with 3 yellow dots down each side of it & are very prevalent in Maine. An interesting note is that if you are familiar with the book Charlotte's Web, Charlotte was of this species.

Most likely, those spiders are the Yellow Garden Spiders(Argiope aurantia). This spider is commonly found in many parts of the United States mainly in woody and forested areas. They are easy to identify because of the black and yellow markings along their abdomen. They also have pale orange colorings on their legs. These spiders are harmless to people.
