When I had my fish tank years ago I remember having some angel fish, in the tank with my kissing gouramis along with a placotimus to help keep the tank clean. It worked well.
Gouramis are actually very friendly fish and get along with most other tropical fish species. The best mates for gouramis would be tropical fish of the same size. Dawrf chichlids are frequent tank mates of the gourami.
