Lenses with focal range between 75 – 150 mm should be used. This range is suitable for taking portraits of a newlyweds and photos of a bigger group of persons.

One of the best lenses that offer a wide angle shot is the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX or the 35mm of D100 for the Nikkor 14mm f2.8d. If I had more information on the camera you were using I could go into more detail. But no matter what your camera you want something that offers a high ISO performance.

The best lenses would be a 35 mm or 50 mm lens or a zoom containing this range. If you use a digital camera with a smaller sensor (APS-C or similar) that would 22 and 31 mm, respectively. Anything smaller will introduce distortion.

The best lens for a wedding group shot is most definitely an 18-70 lens. This will give you both clarity and color with relative ease. This also works for softer images.

Speaking from my own experience in photography and from what I have learned reading about taking photos online, I would have to say that the 17-55mm/f2.8 DX is a great wedding lens.
