What are the best fertilizers for Dogwoods?

My dogwoods are not growing as fast as I think they should be, I would like a fertilizer that will help them grow but not harm animals or children.

This is a mildly broad question. What you need to understand is that there are many different species of plants, and each species reacts differently to chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides. I would suggest that you identify the exact species of plant you are dealing with, purchase a good botanist book.

Make sure your soil is more on the acidic side in terms of pH level, and try an organic fertilizer like Holly-Tone. Also make sure not to use any weed killer chemicals around the dogwood.

Over fertilization will kill the young dogwoods, its better not to fertilize the first year. A 6 foot dogwood can fertilize with 1/4 cup of 12-4-8 per tree in February and middle of June. For a well established tree use 1 cup per inch of trunk diameter. Use general all purpose fertilizers,it will not harm animals or childrens.
