Many commercial fishing operations target large predatory fish such as tuna. These fish can become overpopulated, through increased numbers of prey or reduced competition from other species. However, too many predators can drastically reduce prey populations. Overfishing can reduce the numbers of predators, allowing the prey population to recover.

The only benefit from over fishing that can be accepted is the financial benefits received by the fishermen responsible on the short term basis but not in the long term.
