The modern day Republican party is built around the belief that government should have stronger control over social and moral issues but have little influence or control over financial matters. Many republicans believe in states rights over larger governmental control. Typically, Republicans tend to side with conservative Christian views on abortion, gay issues and censorship.

Republicans once stood for limited and non-intrusive government bound to the dictates of the Constitution, low taxation, free trade, non-interventionist foreign policy, but now they're virtually the same as democrats.
