What are the advantages of using an IUD for birth control?

Some advantages are that it works almost every time with perfect use. Another advantage is that once its in you do not have to worry about taking a pill at the same time everyday.

I have the mirena, which is effortless. It is good for five years and only requires a yearly exam by my OB/GYN. Insurance even covered the majority of the cost.

An IUD is a great birth control method! You don't have to change it each month or take it every day. It can stay in for up to five years.

For me one of the biggest plus in making this decision was not taking pills everyday at a precise hour because I tend to be forgetful, and it wasn't uncomfortable.

With an IUD, you don't have to remember to take a pill everyday (and worry endlessly if you miss one), it's a one time deal that is long term but not permanent. You have it put in, and then you don't have to worry about it until you need another check up. I wouldn't recommend it however.

IUD is a do it once then forget about it birth control method. Once inserted, you do not have to take any pills or take any action at all except for annual OBGYN check ups. It also works without interfering with your natural hormones, thus you can breast feed while using an IUD. That isn't always possible on the pill.

The advantage is that you never have to think about it again, once it is installed. There is no pill to remember to take, or device to use; it works automatically. Of course, it does have some disadvantages, including the fact that minor surgery is required to install (or remove) it.
