The Chicago Diner on Halsted is a great place for vegan and vegetarian food. Earwax Cafe is on Milwaukee Avenue and has good coffee and some unique diner style food. Earwax is very trendy and well-known.

The best coffee in Chicago is at Intelligentsia cafe, a branch of which is near Millennium Park. Istria Cafe is near the University of Chicago - they have good coffee and good ice cream. Chicago's a massive city with numerous neighborhoods and a less than robust coffee culture - so "well-known" for coffee is actually relatively uncommon.
