Since Hindus believe in reincarnation, funerals are about both celebration and mourning. Black clothing is inappropriate, most mourners wear white. The body is kept in their home for one day, when it will be taken out for viewing. All funerals are open casket, so the bereaved can say goodbye. After that, the deceased is cremated on a funeral pyre.

After the death, the body will be wrapped in a cloth and carried to the funeral bier. The family and mourners are present, the women often wailing, the men silent. The body is cremated entirely bare and the hope is to put some of the ashes in the Ganges River.

People wear white and bring flowers. People view but do not touch or photograph the body. Viewing is within 24 hours; the service is ten days later.

The eldest son of the family lights the funeral pyre. In most areas, the son smashes the skull of the dead person to let the soul escape.
