When traveling with pets, it is not a bad idea to get them use to travel inside a kennel or carrier. Make sure you carry food, water, pertinent medical information, and any medications he may be on. If the dog is nervous about riding in the car, start with small trips such as just around the block.

Make sure that you have a secure place for the dog to settle within the moving vehicle. Take some of the dog's familar toys, a blanket, and/or one of your shirts (it smells like you) to comfort the dog. Chihuahuas are small, so they need to feel secure to prevent anxiety attacks and sickness. Stop for bathroom and exercise breaks.

My chihuahua was terrified of the car. I recently bought him a really plush, cushy dog bed, I place it on the back seat and put a familar blanket with home smell in the bed. This helps to comfort him. For longer trips I visit my vet and he perscibes a light sedative to relax my pup.

If your dog is well-behaved you can just bring along a leash and let the dog sit on your lap or on a seat while you're driving. If not, they sell small cages that are relatively affordable for travel.

Windows up high enough so the dog can't jump out, a lot of water and a dish just for the dog, a leash for potty breaks, food.

Let the Chihuahua sit on somebody's lap, safe and sound, and it will be calm. Also bring towels and baggies in case it has an accident in the car.
