You can study the animal behavior of the beta fish by placing one in an enclosed tank by itself and then holding a mirror up to the fish so it can see it's reflection. The animal will immediatly flair up and display an interesting territorial aggressive response to it's own reflection.

Get three bowls with completely different decor in each bowl. Three fish, one in each bowl. Keep them in the bowls for a few days, so they know it is theirs. On the fourth day, put fish b in fish a's bowl, and see what occurs. Remove fish b back to his bowl. On day five, reverse it. Continue on.

Use a mirror to watch how it acts territorial and puffs up. You can have two bettas in two tanks, one with a plant and one without, compare how difference in how much fish food they eat and growth differences. (They usually eat the plant too.)

You can test animal territoriality. Betas normally have to be separated because they are very territorial fish, and placing two in the same tank normally ends badly.

well , given the relative affordability of beta fish why not try a breeding program, whereby you could prove conclusively that genetics play a role in aggression, or submission in case of this most interesting little Fish. See , if any genetic defects are passed on to the fry.
