The main reason that a person would get an annulment is fraud in the marriage. Other reasons would be failure to consummate, not of legal age, or incapacity - meaning drunk or on drugs.

Anything that indicates that the people in the marriage didn't understand what they were doing (mental impairment, that kind of thing) can be grounds for annulment.

Catholics cannot divorce, but another legal procedure--an annulment--is possible. Annulments nullify marriages and can be granted in certain circumstances, such as an uninformed union between a long-lost brother and sister.

Rules regarding eligibility for annulment vary from state to state. Generally, annulment is an option when a) the parties are related; b) one of the parties is unable mentally to enter into marriage; c) force or duress; d) not of legal age; e) fraud [he's impotent, an imposter, etc. ) Annulment erases the marriage as though it didn't happen.

If the time frame is right, and you have not consummated your marriage, you can get an annulment. Another reason is if one person misrepresented themselves.

An annulment is a religious process. Granting an annulment is akin to the marriage never taking place. One reason for an annulment is when one of the parties decides afer the marriage that they do not want to have children.
