Some nice ideas would be to make a walkway in the backyard. Have various plants that can survive and thrive in the shade. There are many species out there. Another good idea is to have some sort of rock garden. The rocks do not need sunlight and water to survive and can look quite nice.

Since there will be alot of shade, I would start to plant ferns and hostas. They like shade and come back every year. Also grass probably will not grow, so a nice mulch around the hostas with large stones would look great.

A wood chip walk way with decortive stone will look good in a wooded lot. Also by building stone tree rings around trees with a decortive rock, will really bring out the look of your lot.

You could make a pathway with wood chips and lined with small rocks through the woods and add plants that love shade like hosta, heuchera, astilbe, ferns, and impatiens.

There are lots of beautiful wild plants that grow in forests and therefore would make it in shade. You can use color in the form of flowering plants (orchids, for example) and texture in the form of the many different ferns that grow in the shade. A wooded lot is a real opportunity to bring the forest to the suburbs.

A forest trail can make your entrance very homely. When you go down a small wooded trail to reach someones home, it really feels more like going to the cottage than a house. Wooded lots provide great privacy, and although you won't get to show off as much, people that visit your property will enjoy it.

When landscaping a wooded lot, you must take into consideration if you want to plant new plants. If you do, the main issue you will have is sunlight, therefore it would be best to plant plants that require shade.

Embrace the shade! Plant shade loving plants such as hosta and use mulch to define paths and spruce up the look of the lot.

Some ideas would be to have benches under nice shade trees, maybe a small gazebo in the middle of a clearing, plant flowers that are intended for shaded areas in pots and set them around for color.
