In Japan, when giving gifts of items that come in multiples (such as candies, small toys, dishes, etc. ), make sure the amount is an odd number, as the Japaneses believe that odd numbers are lucky. Also, never give gifts in a multiple of four (3 is ideal).

You should never write a persons name in red ink. You should never stick your chopsticks upright in any meal, especially rice, they are only stuck upright at funerals.

The most common one, and most commonly broken, has to do with sticking your chopsticks straight up in the rice. Also, do not pass food with chopsticks to chopsticks. Both these acts are similar to funeral rites with the chopsticks resembling incense offerings and the passing being similar to the way bones are handed in cremation. Both are bad luck.
