How about a trip for starters? Somewhere new to explore they haven't been before. A trip to a spa to get some well deserved pampering. Perhaps season tickets to their favorite sport. Or, a thoughtful gift every month for a year, something tailor made just for them.

Gift ideas are: a photo album with pictures of them over the years, a thoughtful card about how they've positively influence your life, a watch, a new car, a purse or wallet and a preplanned vacation.

Think of giving an experience as a gift. A lunch together or a pair of tickets to a show. Or try re-framing an old favorite photo (honeymoon or childhood, etc)

Always welcome are gift certificates. A pretty flower arrangement of either real or fake flowers. Most people like a different maybe exotic plant.

It depends on their sense of humor. A friend of mine who turned 50 got gag gifts and a T-shirt that said "You ain't ---- till you turn fifty".

At this age, most people have all the basics in life - so either something personal, or luxurious. Eg. you could put together a personal collection of photos, organise a family reunion, or take them on holiday. You could buy them a massage, luxuriously expensive perfume or jewelry.

Tickets to a concert, play, or sporting event are great gifts for someone of any age -- just be sure to research which events your friend might like.
