The two main defensive schemes in basketball are man-to-man, where each player is assigned a player from the other team, and zone, where each player is assigned a certain portion of the court to cover. A double-team occurs when two defenders force the ball out of an offensive player's hands.

One great way to play defense is to play a 2-3 zone. This mean 2 players on top and three across the bottom closer to the hoop.

A good defensive play would be defending your man without committing a foul on yourself and hurting your team. You must slide your feet and stay with your man across the entire court.

A simple and easy defense for your son's basketball team would be to remind him to always stay between the opposing player and the basket, and to challenge every shot.
