Gothic writing, as in using a Gothic language/alphabet, or books written in the Gothic period? The latter refers to stories written in the late 18th century--romance/horror genre in a medieval setting. Horace Walpole is considered the creator of the genre with the book "The Castle of Otranto."

Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764) is viewed as the first Gothic work. Gothic novels: The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Monk, Dracula, Jane Eyre, and Frankenstein. Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! contains Gothic elements. Gothic short stories: E.A. Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Pit and the Pendulum," etc.

One of the earliest Gothic novels is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Edgar Allen Poe is another important Gothic writer. Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights is another example of Gothic fiction.

The first Gothic novel is widely held to be The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole. Matthew Lewis' The Monk is an important early example; Anne Radcliffe helped to bring the genre to the mainstream (her most famous work is The Mysteries of Udalpho).
