The downside of joining the peace corp would be the fact that in a sense it is like a military branch and one would be away from his or her family for quite a while. The peace corps is a great duty for one to embark upon and takes extreme dedication.

A downside to joining the Peace Corps is that you do not have a choice regarding your specific station assignment. The Peace Corps should be considered a volunteer assignment, not a paying job, as your compensation will be enough to cover your expenses in your host country, but not enough to pay bills in the U.S.

The main drawback to working for the peace corp is that you get paid diddly crap. A friend of mine works for them and he's on food stamps because they pay him so little.

There is a significant time commitment. Also, you will have to travel to some undesirable places. This could even be dangerous, not only due to political upheaval, but due to exposure to disease (such as malaria). Moreover, you will not be able to easily leave and contact with friends and family back home could be limited.
