Aside from strep throat, mononucleosis and tonsillitis affect the throat. Other infections can include bacterial infections of the throat, and Influenza can cause irritation of the throat. The most common cause of throat irritation is allergies.

A sore throat could be caused by viruses like those that cause colds or mononucleosis , bacteria like those that cause strep, allergens like pet dander, molds and pollens, smoking or breathing polluted air. If it persists you may want a throat culture done to try to find the cause.

Besides strep a very common one is Mono. You CAN get it apart from kissing someone (I got it by standing near someone that had it). It takes two weeks to get rid of with constant use of ibuprofen and is sometimes accompanied by exhaustion and fever. Another one could be bronchitis. Either one, see a doctor.

You could just have a minor red throat, or you could have a severe sore throat and your tonsils could be inflamed really bad. If you have alot of trouble with your tonsils being inflamed, they might need to come out.
