If the family is close by, a park or hotel resort is fun. Consider also a ski lodge (summer) or state park if overnight lodging is part of the gathering.
I think some common places are maybe a park. a lake definetly! It depends on what your family is like. possibly a restaurant. it depends on you and your family.
