A dog's hair is very common to human hair. If you over wash it it can become dry and fragile. Also if your dog has a type of skin condition it can cause your dog's hair to fall out. A way to help prevent alot of hair problems is to try and use moistureizing shampoos and definatly conditioners.

The problem could be due to the particular breed of dog. Hormones or allergies can cause hair loss. A dog hair that has hair with a bad odor could mean that he has a fungal infection and needs to be seen by a vet. Ringworm can also cause hair problems.

Diet would be a major factor. Be sure you are feeding your dog a well balanced dog food. Also look for parasites as they can cause these sort of problems.
