Some cases where DNA profiling has helped solved an old crime are those in murder and rape cases wherein DNA samples are gathered in the crime scene and in the victims body parts. Such samples are being stored in a DNA bank for reference purposes.

Recently a man was released from prison, where he had served many years for raping a woman. The police used his DNA sample to prove that he did not commit the crime, a test which was not available at the time of his sentencing.

DNA testing was totally unreliable back in the day. Many people who swear they were innocent were later found innocent and people who got away with murders from decades ago are being convicted of murder and going to jail. Due to advances in DNA testing true justice is happening more.

Rape kits and blood from murder scenes from ten and more years ago are now being routinely tested for DNA of the offender. And because the DNA test itself is new, this allows the statute of limitations for the rapist or attacker to restart.

Many cold case rape kits are being solved by running DNA testing of these kits against the DNA database of known criminals. Since the statute of limitations in these cases is based on the date the DNA test is run, 15 year old rapes can still be prosecuted.

When an old crime has been committed before DNA labs and an offender who is currently a suspect and DNA lab which includes blood work, fingernails, skin residue will prove the offender is guilty and proves the offender was at the crime scene.
