Start with small sections. Comb your fingers through one section to split it into three sections. Then, grab one section with one hand and two sections with the other. Put the left section over the middle, and then the right section over the middle. Keep alternating until you have a braid as long as the strands.

Using a mirror both in front and behind of as you braid allows you to see what your hands are doing. Using clips and pins to hold the braid in place as you go is helpful. Watching different online video tutorials gives step-by-step instructions, and of course, practice makes perfect!

The most common braiding technique is the French Braid, which uses three sections of hair woven over one another picking up hair from underneath each section as you move down the head. The fishbone is also popular involving only two sections and smaller partings.

You want to split your hair up into three even portions. Take the left side move it over the top of the middle one so it is in the middle. Now do the same for the right strand so it is in the middle. Keep repeating left side right side.
