What are some barrel racing tips?

This has always been intriguing to me, and I gave it a try, but it's much harder than I thought.

Make sure that you are racing safely. Your saddle should be tight so it does not slide as you are turning. If you are a beginner, make sure that you have a horse who you can safely control. It is recommended that you are comfortable with riding at a gallop before you begin racing.

The first thing about being a successful barrel racer is to be a balanced rider with a secure seat. You should have a solid foundation at all gaits before moving onto barrels. Find a good horse to start on, a patient, kind horse will let you focus on improving yourself.

Before you attempt it again, make sure that the horse you will be partnering with enjoys your company as much as you do theirs. It is an exercise of trust on both parts. Then, do a few laps at a slower rate, working up the speed over time.

There's two popular patterns the barrels racing Texas and Cloverleaf. I would try both and see what you and your horse like best. Focus on only one. Make sure when turning the barrels you set deep in the saddle, hold onto the saddle horn and keep your heels down.
