Not much detail as many bugs fit that description but one comes to mind such as the dreaded cow killers. Better know down south as red velvet ants. Their real name is Daymutilla Occidentalis.

Without much of a description, I'm going to guess you are describing what are referred to as "cow killers" or red velvet ants. Their scientific name is Dasymutilla occidentalis. Interestingly, they aren't actually ants but are of the family Mutillidae which include several different flightless wasps. The cow killer moniker arises from the legend of their painful sting.

It may be a velvet ant or cow ant. The anterior part has a sharp stinger, much like a wasp.

If i'm thinking of the same bug as you then those bugs are called "cow killers" since they sting cows while they stand.
