Dealer documentation fees are the fees incurred in the title transfer, registration and licensing of a vehicle, RV, motorcycle, boat or other item that requires this type of documentation. The dealer then passes the costs to the consumer.

Many dealers of anything will charge you documentation fees or paperwork fees for their work. It is a way for them to make a little more money off of you. It is essentially a fee charged to help pay for the paperwork.

In some states, these fees may be very specific and regulated. In others, they are inspecific and an excuse to pad your bill. You need to really read the fine print here, and question, question, question. It really is a case of "Buyer Beware".

If you are asking about fees as they pertain to buying a vehicle, then they are the fees levied against the consumer that the dealer charges in order to register the car with the DMV. The dealer will handle the transfer of title and registration for this fee.
