"Active-Dashboards" refers to a real-time management information reporting system, often internet/web-based but not necessarily, where charts/graphs or other highly intuitive/visual methods (like stock-tickers, instant-messages, news-clips, ...) are used to display the health/status of a business or organization. Analagous to an automobile-dashboard's: speedometer, tachometer, fuel-gauge, temperature-gauge, voltage-gauge, ... but business/organization-appropriate metrics.

An active dashboard is a graphical display in a webpage or other presentation medium that will change the values displayed in graphs and charts in step with changes to the underlying data. These active dashboards allow you to associate these graphs and charts with dynamic data and as the data values change, the chart being viewed reflects these changes.

Dashboards consolidate multiple reports into a single view for easy analysis. Executives and operational managers rely on them to maintain the stability and reliability of business processes. Active dashboards require three interrelated components: (1) Access to data (operational and decision support) (2) Business rules assimilation (3) Information delivery.
