Fighting for a woman's honour, treating women with respect and dignity, placing women before all others. Being noble, respecting a woman's virtue. This treatment extended to women of all ages and classes. Today it would be considered sexism.

Many of the early rules had to do with honor on the battlefield/ tournament field. The rules governing women applied only to noblewomen, not peasants. While raping women was frowned upon, a knight could duel another knight for a woman, and if he won, could do to her as he wished. Later rules came to include courtesy, only for noblewomen.

In essence, the rules of chivalry centered on respect and honesty. Respect women, protect the innocent, live to defend the King and Country. Women were to be treated with respect, but there were no further explanations of what was expected of a knight.

You have to be honest, and faithful for starters. You may not take someone whom you are ashamed of or feels ashamed of you. Always be polite and respectful towards ladies. Speak no ill, or insults towards anyone. As in all things, do not let passion and desire over whelm common sense and be courteous, kind and sincere.
