Parakeets are great pets! Search the internet for groups devoted to parakeets, and read Parrots for Dummies (parakeets are parrots). Enjoy your new friend.

You can easily find a guide in just about any bookstore. You could also ask for help in a pet shop or (much better) someone who actually breeds parrots.

Be sure the cage has enough room for him to comfortably stretch his wings in each direction, and feed a varied diet- not just seed mix.

Male parakeets tend to be much more vocal and mean than the female bird. It is more difficult to train the male than female. The male will try to bite without notice.

Cage should be no higher than 6ft from the floor. Keep away from drafts/windows and heat registers. Cage should be large enough for the bird to exercise it's wings.

Single parakeets get very lonely unless they are with someone constantly! They are very yappy birds, sing and talk a ton! They are very clean birds, and do not like being kept in cages at all, let alone dirty cages. They enjoy bells and whistles and mirrors. They can like up to 10 years!

Male parakeets are not much different from females in this regard. There are plenty of websites and books with detailed information on keeping and caring for parakeets - search around.
