The town is actually named after the chocolate. The town's original name was Derry Church, or officially, Derry Township. In 1906 it was renamed "Hershey" because of the popular brand of chocolate produced there. The Hershey company was founded in 1894 in Derry Church and has remained in that location ever since.

Hershey Pennsylvania was named first. They decided to call the chocolate company after the town it was famous for. Naming things like this is common for many industries or sciences.
