Leif Ericson of Norway is thought to have been the first European to discover North America. According to the Sagas of Icelanders, he landed in a place he called Vinland, around 1000 A. D. and built a settlement there. Possible remains of a Norse settlement dating from the same period have been found at present-day L'Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland.
