Question by  marbozon (93)

Should I tell someone if my boyfriend has depression?

I know this is a really serious problem, but I don't want him to get mad at me.

If he has been depressed for a long period of time, suggest that he seek help. Give him an opportunity to help himself before you tell anyone. If this doesn't work, I would tell a close friend that you and your boyfriend both trust.

I think that first of all you should try helping him rather than telling someone else; that might depress him even more. Nevertheless if you think that he has a serious problem you should talk to a specialist that could help him.

Yes, you should. He might think that he can handle it on his own, but that is the tricky thing about depression. You don't realize you need help until it is quite advanced. You should tell someone that you and he can trust, i. e. a parent, teacher, counselor, religious leader, so he can get the help he needs.

The hard part about helping people is that people are very resistant to being helped. What therapists do is recognize that the stubborn desire we have to help ourselves is actually very healthy and they build on that. Tell him that by getting help, he would actually be helping you!

You probably aren't qualified to diagnose depression. If you have serious concerns about your boyfriend's mental health, you should definitely tell someone. The "someone" should include your boyfriend himself, his parents, and a doctor. If your boyfriend is really sick, he could worsen and do something to himself. You'll regret it if you don't speak out.

First I would speak to him. If you feel that the situation is serious, then yes I would. Personally, I would speak to his family and see who is family doctor is, and if there is a history in the family for depression.
