Regarding the NFL, what does "GU" mean?

"GU" stands for Gene Upshaw, a proclaimed hall of fame offensive lineman and a chief executive of the NFLPA. He died in August of 2008 and thus players across the league wore GU patches to honor him.

GU in regards to the NFL stands for Gene Upshaw, who was a player for the Oakland Raiders, and then became the union players rep.

The GU that teams wear on the uniforms is what I assume you're referring to. GU stands for Gene Upshaw. Upshaw was a former player, but later became the executive director of the National Football League Player's Union, which is why he is honored on the uniforms. He passed away August 20, 2008.

This season, every NFL player has a patch on his uniform with the letters "GU. " This patch is a memorial to Gene Upshaw. Gene Upshaw died during the most recent off-season. He was a well-known player for the Oakland Raiders, but is best known as the long-time head of the NFL player's union.
