dogs

Question by  Kippie (1)

My golden retriever breathes heavily and drinks a lot of water in the heat. Should I worry about this, or do I just have a furry golden?

She's 4 years old, and we live in middle Tennessee. She is normally an inside dog.

It is normal for dogs with heavier fur to get hot and breathe heavily. It's a good sign that your dog is drinking a lot of water and panting. Since dogs can't sweat they pant to help cool themselves down.

She doesn't tolerate heat well, so she's cooling herself by panting and drinking cold water. Brush her daily to thin her coat and don't leave her out for long stretches.
