car repairs

Question by  winer (3)

My 1996 Maxima idles fine up to 2000 RPMs, then cuts out intermittently. What's the problem?

There is no code, no engine light.

My guess is a dirty throttle position sensor or a vacuum leak along the intake. If those two are not the problem you have to have a bad sensor somewhere, or a bad connector/wire. Start the car and wiggle wires and connectors. Unplug connectors to sensors and check for problems like corrosion or bad insulation.

It sounds like your rev limiter is kicking in too low. Check your oil level. Electronic valve timing systems use oil pressure to drive this, and if there is not enough oil the system can trigger the rev limiter at an RPM range lower than expected.

You might want to have your cat converter checked out. When the cat gets plugged then it will cause the vehicle to run rough without setting a code.

This sounds related to the fuel injection system. Something like you mass airflow sensor or throttle position may be dirty or defective. I would either look online or purchase a service manual to see how to test these. Also check the engine for vacuum leaks and loose or burnt wires. You should also check your fuel system.
