My 1981 Harley Davidson charging system does not work... why?

It might be a loose connection or terminal. Go over the system to see. Check the charging voltage to make sure it is actually charging also. It may be bad.

Most repairs like this consist of 3 things: Acquiring the correct parts, having a schematic of your vehicle, and having a basic understanding of mechanics. I would call a mechanic.

The voltage regulator is a major cause of charging failure, but may only be the symptom. The regulator is solid state and very reliable, given no abnormal conditions. A common cause of regulator failure is stator winding insulation breakdown. The stator generates charging power to the regulator, an insulation failure causes a higher voltage that burns out the regulator.
