No, it is pourious and would not be safe for food. The food would get in the cracks and would cause food poisoning. A non-pourious counter top such as: granite, concrete, metal and some new products that used just for countertops. Check your home store.

Travertine is too soft to make a good surface for a kitchen counter. It can be stained with water, oil, or rust, and vinegar can etch the surface. You may want to look at synthetic surfaces like Corian or Silestone that have the look of natural surfaces without the disadvantages.

Travertine is not smooth, quite porous and can be easily broken. I would not recommend it for a kitchen counter. It would make rolling out pastry dough difficult, and would be hard to keep clean. Being porous, it would be susceptible to stains and odors, and would be a constant battle to keep sanitary and clean.

Travertine comes in a very nice light colors that include veining in the pattern. The bad thing about using it for a kitchen countertop is that it is very pourous in its natural state. These holes can be large or small and should be filled to keep bacteria from growing.

I would have to suggest not. It is a very sensitive material to acids and many household cleaning agents. It can also get stained, faded, or dulled if lemon juice, vinegar and alcohol on the surface. It also easily attracts dirt and dust much easier making it even harder to keep clean, especially in a kitchen.
