Styrofoam is a trademarked name for polystyrene foam made by Dow Chemical Company. Polystyrene foam is recyclable, and falls under Recycling Symbol number 6. Polystyrene is biodegradable, but it typically takes about 500 years for an ordinary Styrofoam container to biodegrade. As such, there is an initiative to restrict the use of polystyrene containers.

Currently there is no way to recycle styrofoam other than to find ways to reuse it, such as for packing. However, scientists in Dublin have found a bacteria that can degrade styrofoam so it may be possible to recycle it in the future.
