Statutes of limitation on collection of debts vary from state to state. Some are as long as ten years; others are much shorter.

statutes of limitation apply to a time frame that someone can be sued. A debt has no time limit when it comes to attempts to collect.

There is usually a seven-year statute of limitations when it comes to collecting debts. Any debt older than that will not appear on your credit report. (This clock restarts whenever you make a payment on the debt. ) On the other hand, a bankruptcy will stay on your credit report for the next ten years.

Statutes of limitations vary from state to state, and you have to check the laws for your particular state. Also, they generally run from when you last made a payment.
