Question by  user26 (176)

Is there a medical condition which causes infant armpit odor?

My baby is 6 months old, and I've noticed a very strong odor from her armpits. I need to know if this is normal.

If the baby is kept clean and bathed on a regular basis, then there shouldn't be a smell. Be sure spit up is not being collected there. There is a rare medical condition that involves early puberty that could cause this, but it is far more likely to have another cause.

1. It could be a bacterial build up due to lack of washing with soap and water in that area. 2. It could be a yeast infection caused by natural yeast in the environment in an overly damp area. Ensure your child is not sweaty under their arms, which is not normal for an infant.

If you are bathing your infant regularly, this is not normal. There may be a skin infection or other problem. Please consult a doctor to be sure. The Internet is not the place to go for medical advice.

A lot of people have this problem. It is caused by an over abundance of sweat glands in the armpit area. Usually the prescribe you a special deoderant to take care of this.
