Is the higher priced gas better for your car?

Someone told me it really doesn't matter.

Some cars have higher performance, high compression engines which require the higher octane (more expensive) gas. It doesn't burn any better in an engine that doesn't require it, and in fact can burn worse. Buy the least expensive gas you can find for your car unless the manual says to put something higher in.

Higher priced(higher octane) gas is generally better for you engine. On older engine, the quality of fuel doesn't really make much difference. On a newer cars or cars with higher compression ratio a better fuel is beneficial. Higher octane fuel is stronger which increase performance and sometimes fuel economy. It are also purer so burns cleaner.
